A 6-year-old girl who was struck by a car Friday morning was taken to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga with a "moderate" leg injury, according to Cleveland, Tenn., police.

The girl was trying to cross Westland Drive near the Park Towne Apartments to board her school bus when the accident occurred just before 8 a.m. The bus was southbound and the black Toyota Scion that hit the child was traveling north, according to a news release from Evie West, public information officer for the Cleveland Police Department.

"The bus had yellow lights flashing but had not yet put the stop sign out," West said.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital at Erlanger, according to West, and the driver whose car hit the child was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Stan Clark, public information officer for Bradley County EMS, said he hopes the accident serves as a wake-up call to drivers.

"Please take that moment to slow down and let that school bus get loaded," he said. "Motorists need to be alert in school zones and in the presence of school buses."
