Tennessee's new Republican Attorney General to be sworn in Wednesday

NASHVILLE - Herbert H. Slatery III will be sworn in as Tennessee's first Republican attorney general in 144 years on Wednesday with his soon-to-be ex-boss Gov. Bill Haslam and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee administering the oath of office.

Slatery, 62, will become the state's 27th attorney general. He replaces Bob Cooper, a Democrat and Chattanooga native.

Slatery is currently Haslam's legal counsel and was appointed attorney general by the the five Supreme Court justices earlier this month

Prior to serving in the Haslam administration, Slatery was in private practice in Knoxville with Egerton, McAfee, Armistead & Davis, P.C. for 30 years, serving as president from 1998 -2007, and Chairman from 2008 through January, 2011.

The Knoxville native is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Tennessee College of Law. He is a member of the Tennessee and Knoxville Bar Associations, the Knoxville Bar Foundation, and the Harry Phillips American Inn of Court.

Slatery and his wife, Cary, have two children, Frances and Harrison, who both live in Knoxville.
