Gilbert gets second Sunbelt Tour win

Gibby Gilbert III of Ooltewah parred the first playoff hole Sunday at The National Golf Club at Pinehurst, N.C., and earned his second Sunbelt Senior Tour victory of 2014. Gilbert and Chris Hockaday of Angier, N.C., shot 11-under-par 205s for 54 holes in the Patriot Invitational. Gilbert had 67s on Friday and Sunday and totaled 15 birdies, an eagle and six bogeys for the event. His previous Sunbelt win was in the tournament named for his father at Eagle Bluff in Chattanooga in May.

• Former Heritage High School golfer Hunter Cornelius is tied for second individually at 2-under-par 70 and his Coastal Georgia team is in first place after the first round of the Thomas University Fall Invitational tournament at Kinderlou Forest Club in Valdosta, Ga. Coastal Georgia's 287 leads USC Beaufort and Webber International by four strokes and Abraham Baldwin Community College by five. Beaufort's Alan Cooke shot a 69.

Wrestling

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Cory Mock is ranked No. 10 nationally at 165 pounds in the first ratings of the season released by Flo Wrestling. Other Mocs listed include seniors Nick Soto (12th, 133) and newcomer Sean Boyle (20th, 125). Rankings for the 174-pound through heavyweight classes have not yet been released. Mock and Soto are defending Southern Conference champions.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones K fall baseball team won the World Wood Bat Southeastern Qualifier this past weekend and earned free entry into the prestigious World Wood Bat National Championship in late October in Jupiter, Fla. The Cyclones capped off the weekend with a 9-1 mercy-rule win over MBA Pride Elite from Tampa as Cruz Bautista pitched a complete game and Corbin Brooksbank had three hits and three RBIs and scored two runs. Cade Evans had two hits and two RBIs, Hunter Oliver hit a two-run double and Nic Gaddis tripled and scored twice. Jackson Bell had a 63-pitch complete game in a 4-0 win over the Fat Cat Baseball 18s, and Gaddis, Logan Haga, Cole Vaughn and Seth Wicker were other winning pitchers for the Cyclones. Evans had two hits and two runs and Hunter Mercer had two hits and two RBIs in a defeat of the East Cobb Astros 17s, and Noah Hill tripled, doubled and drove in three in the 4-0 victory. Gaddis had a two-run homer and scored twice and Hill and Mercer each had two hits and a run in the first playoff win. In the come-from-behind over the Georgia Baseball Club, Mercer homered, singled and had two RBIs; Hill had a two-run double and scored twice; Gaddis also had a two-run hit; and Corey Edgemon and Evans each had two hits and combined for three runs.

Tennis

• Chattanooga's entry in the 3.5 men's 65-over division won the USTA state tournament this past weekend in Knoxville. Tom McCullough is the captain of the championship team, which also includes Tom Carter, Tommy Alexander, Al Jones, Ralph Mann, Ed Diaz and Earl Hereford.

Auto Racing

• Richie Clayton won the makeup race and $2,000 in his 454 Chevy-powered dragster Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a 5.22-second run on a 5.22 dial and then had a 5.24 ona 5.24 and finished second to Justin Dempsey of Whitwell in the regular Pro Class race. Dempsey won with a 4.88 run on a 4.88 dial. Eric Boyd was second in the makeup race. Ray Zumstf of Harrison won the Foot Brake class with a 5.32 on a 5.30 in a 1972 Valiant, with Daryl Goodner second, and T.J. Pursley from Manchester was the Junior Dragster winner with a 7.90 on a 7.90; Dunlap's Chloe Keener was second.

Soccer

• Covenant College senior midfielder Joel Friesen was the USA South men's soccer player of the week for his two goals in two Scots matches. He had the game-winner against Berry and the opening score in a 2-1 loss at Birmingham-Southern.

• Paris Bentley scored for Tennessee Temple in a 2-1 women's soccer loss at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky.

Running

• Covenant's Eliot Kaufmann was the USA South men's overall and rookie cross country runner of the week for his ninth-place finish out of 65 runners in the North Georgia Invitational meet that was loaded with NCAA Division II teams, and Covenant's Ruthie Cargill was the women's overall honoree with Margaret Fitch again the rookie of the week. Cargill, a junior, was 22nd out of 103 runners in the 5k, and Fitch was 29th.

Volleyball

• The Georgia Northwestern Technical College volleyball team beat Crown College 3-1 on Monday at the Rossville Athletic Center, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-22. Crown had won their Aug. 30 meeting. Sabrina Garcia led the Lady Bobcats (3-5) in kills with seven, while Mikiah Treece had 20 digs and four aces, Sara Birge also served four aces and Rachel McGill had 11 digs.
