Georgia inside linebacker Ramik Wilson is happy to get another crack at the Vanderbilt Commodores.
"It's going to be great," Wilson said by phone Monday night. "We've got them at our house this year, and we'll be ready to get after them."
The Bulldogs were leading 27-14 early in the fourth quarter of last year's game in Nashville when the Commodores faced a fourth-and-4 at Georgia's 30-yard line.
A Patton Robinette pass to Jonathan Krause was incomplete, but Wilson was flagged for targeting and was ejected. Officials reviewed the play and determined there was no targeting foul, so Wilson was reinstated to the game, but the 15-yard penalty by rule had to be enforced.
Vanderbilt scored on the drive to pull within 27-21 and eventually pulled out a 31-27 upset, and it wasn't until after last season that the NCAA voted to amend the targeting penalty. This season, if a targeting call is reversed and a player is allowed to stay in the game, the penalty is removed unless another infraction, such as roughing the passer, applies.
"That still haunts us today, because we know the rule they made at the end of last year," outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. "We call it the 'Ramik Wilson rule' or the 'Georgia rule,' because that was a direct relation of that. We knew that it shouldn't have come down to that, but it's something that will always be in the backs of our minds."
Said Wilson: "I think about it from time to time, but it's in the past. This is a new year and a new opportunity."
Dawson departs
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt announced after Monday's practice that junior cornerback Sheldon Dawson "is not a member of the team anymore."
Dawson, a 5-foot-11, 190-pounder from Memphis, totaled 12 tackles as a freshman in 2012 and 13 tackles and a tackle for loss last season, when he earned his one career start at Georgia Tech. He had three tackles in Saturday's win over Tennessee, his only stops this season.
His departure leaves reserve offensive lineman Hunter Long as Georgia's lone player from the Volunteer State.
Falsely accused
Junior tailback Todd Gurley was falsely accused of assaulting another Georgia student early Sunday morning at the Bourbon Street Bar & Grill in downtown Athens, the Athens Banner-Herald reported Monday. Gurley told police that he was reaching down to pick up the student's hat when the student approached him and uttered a racial comment.
The student was then punched by a white male, as was obvious on surveillance video.
Forgotten face
Tailback Brendan Douglas was called into duty last season as a freshman when Gurley and Keith Marshall were sidelined by injuries. It was the same for fellow newcomer J.J. Green, but Green has been moved to the secondary and started at safety against Tennessee.
The additions of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel have left Douglas a forgotten face in the backfield, as the 5-11, 202-pounder from Augusta has just eight carries for 47 yards, with all of that coming in the 66-0 rout of Troy.
"We love having him here," Richt said. "He's a great kid and a really good player. He's been helping us on special teams and has been getting a little bit of playing time. We know it's a long season, and he may get more reps before you know it.
"He knows what to do, and we've seen him play well in big games."
With Michel out this week and with the status of Marshall unknown, Douglas could be third on the depth chart behind Gurley and Chubb.
Odds and ends
CBS elected to use a six-day option for Oct. 11, so the kickoff time and network for Georgia's game next week at Missouri will not be known until Sunday. ... The Bulldogs practiced for 90 minutes Monday in shoulder pads and shorts. ... Vanderbilt has scored 11 touchdowns this season but only five by the offense.
