KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A Maryville man has been sentenced for a scheme in which he represented himself as an attorney to two foster parents who wanted to adopt the children in their custody.
According to the U.S. attorney's office in Knoxville, 49-year-old Kevin Scott Thibault gave the foster parents fake adoption papers with the forged signatures of judges. Thibault also demanded that the parents sign a power of attorney allowing him to conduct financial transactions on their behalf from which Thibault obtained at least $400,000.
Thibault was sentenced in federal court on Thursday to five years for forgery and six years for mail fraud. The sentences are to run concurrently and will be followed by three years of supervised probation.
He also was ordered to pay $380,000 restitution.
