Alabama death row inmate hangs himself in prison cell

BESSEMER, Ala. -- Authorities say a man convicted of killing a Huntsville police officer has died in a Jefferson County prison.

The county's Deputy Coroner Bill Yates says 41-year-old Benito Alberran hanged himself Sunday night at the William Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer.

Yates says Albarran had been in the prison's infirmary and was in a solitary cell when his body was recovered.

Alberran was convicted of fatally shooting Officer Daniel Golden August 2005 and was sentenced to death.
