UTC women beat Mercer in SoCon play

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team opened the second half with a flurry to claim a 71-59 win over Mercer this afternoon at McKenzie Arena.

UTC (19-3, 7-0 SoCon) led 40-29 at the half and opened the second period with an 18-4 run to take control over the Bears in the teams' first meeting as Southern Conference opponents.

Sophomore guard Chelsey Shumpert led UTC with 19 points and was 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Jasmine Joyner scored 12 first-half points and finished with 16, and freshman Keiana Gilbert had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Mercer (11-11, 3-3) was led by Alicia Williams with 18 points and Kahlia Lawrence with 12.

UTC's defense held Precious Bridges - the leading scorer in the SoCon - to two points in the first half and she finished with 14 points.
