RIO DE JANEIRO - The Latest on the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (all times local):

Michael Phelps has claimed the 21st gold medal of his career, anchoring the United States to a dominating victory in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
About an hour after winning gold medal No. 20 in the 200 butterfly, Phelps completed his grueling double with a triumphant four laps of the pool.
The result was no longer in doubt by the time Phelps dove in. Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas and Ryan Lochte made sure of that, handing off a commanding lead to the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.
Phelps essentially spent the next 100 seconds or so on a victory lap, the crowd's cheers growing louder with each stroke. He touched in 7 minutes, 0.66 seconds, a full body length ahead of Britain's James Guy.
The British earned silver in 7:03.13, while Japan took the bronze in 7:03.50.
When it was done, Phelps simply sat on the starting block, thoroughly exhausted. He motioned at his neck as though he had nothing left to give.

Before a sellout crowd numbering more than 42,000, host country Brazil played to a 0-0 draw with South Africa on Tuesday night at Amazonia Arena in Manaus.
The fans chanted for Brazilian star Marta, who has drawn attention for her stellar play while Brazil's men have struggled at the Olympics.
Brazil had already secured a spot in the women's soccer quarterfinals before the match in the city known as the gateway to the Amazon. South Africa had already been eliminated from the Olympics.
In the other late match on Tuesday, Sweden played to a scoreless draw with China in Brasilia.

The Iron Lady is piling up quite a medal collection in Rio.
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary claimed her third gold of the Olympics with a victory in the 200-meter individual medley on Tuesday night.
Hosszu added to her wins in the 400 IM and 100 backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 6.58 seconds.
This has been an Olympic of redemption for Hosszu, a long-time star at the world championships who always seemed to come up short on the biggest stage.
Not anymore.
Siobhan-Marie O'Connor of Britain challenged Hosszu all the way but had to settle for silver. Maya DiRado of the United States held on for the bronze.

Louisa Cadamuro scored a pair of goals and France defeated New Zealand 3-0 on Tuesday night in Salvador.
Eugenie Le Sommer also scored for Les Bleus, who finish second in Group G to the United States.
The third-ranked French will play No. 10 Canada in a quarterfinal match on Friday in Sao Paulo.
Canada defeated Germany 2-1 in Brasilia Tuesday to finish atop Group F.

A French tennis player has been kicked off the country's Olympic team for violating team rules.
Benoit Paire, who was seeded 16th at the Rio Games, was asked to pack his bags, French tennis federation official Arnaud Di Pasquale told TV broadcaster France 2, according to the L'Equipe newspaper.
Di Pasquale did not explain exactly what Paire did, but did say the player had been warned repeatedly.
Paire lost in the third round of singles at the Olympics on Tuesday, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) against Fabio Fognini of Italy.

As a former Olympic gold medalist in the ring, Russia's head boxing coach Alexander Lebzyak is used to fighting - but he may not like his newest opponent.
Lebzyak's no-nonsense criticism of Russian fighters' poor performances in Rio, accusing them of lacking the will to win, has drawn the ire of Ramzan Kadyrov, the martial arts-loving strongman leader of the Russian region of Chechnya.
On Instagram, his preferred way of communicating with the public, Kadyrov says Lebzyak has been insulting Russian fighters and treating them like "children from a kindergarten."
Kadyrov blames Lebzyak and his staff for the defeat of Chechen fighter Adlan Abdurashidov in the lightweight last 16. Kadyrov posted a picture of himself with Abdurashidov, calling him a "brother."

The Olympic tennis men's doubles semifinals are set, and among those closing in on a medal are Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez of Spain, and Steve Johnson and Jack Sock of the United States.
Johnson and Sock advanced Tuesday by beating the eighth-seeded duo of Roberto Bautista Agut and David Ferrer of Spain 6-4, 6-2.
Next up for the Americans is a match against No. 5 Florin Mengea and Horia Tecau of Romania, who eliminated No. 3 Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares of Brazil 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
On the other half of the draw, Nadal and Lopez defeated Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya of Austria 6-3, 6-1, setting up a semifinal against No. 7 Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil of Canada. That duo beat Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-1.

Katie Ledecky is on her way to an Olympic feat that's only been done one other time.
Ledecky held off Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom to win gold in the 200-meter freestyle Tuesday night at the Rio Olympics.
Fifth at the first flip turn, Ledecky powered to the front on the third lap and grittily held off a hard-charging Sjostrom coming to the wall.
Ledecky touched in 1 minute, 53.73 seconds. The silver went to Sjostrom in 1:54.08, while early leader Emma McKeon faded to the bronze in 1:54.92.
World-record holder Federica Pelligrini of Italy was fourth.
Ledecky is trying to become only the second female after Debbie Meyer in 1968 to capture the three longest freestyle events at a single Olympics. Ledecky now has the 200 and 400 titles, and she's an overwhelming favorite to win the 800.

Michael Phelps made up for one of the few losses in his Olympic career.
Now, he's got an even 20 gold medals.
Phelps avenged his defeat at the 2012 London Games by winning the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday night, holding off Japan's Masato Sakai by a mere four-hundredths of a second.
The victory clearly delighted Phelps, who held up one finger, then sat on a lane rope and egged on the roaring crowd at the Olympic Aquatic Stadium.
He'd had this one marked on his calendar ever since he came out of retirement. Four years ago, Phelps misjudged his finish - gliding a little too long after his final stroke - and was edged at the wall by South African Chad le Clos.
This time, it was Phelps out front - barely - while Le Clos could only manage a fourth-place showing. Hungary's Tamas Kenderesi claimed the bronze.
He has one more race Tuesday night, anchoring the U.S. team in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.

Defending Olympic champion Nathan Adrian barely advanced in the preliminaries of the 100-meter freestyle at the Rio Olympics.
He wasn't taking any chances in the semifinals Tuesday night.
Competing in lane eight, Adrian posted the fastest time out of 16 swimmers, sending him to Wednesday's final with a much more customary position in the center of the pool.
The biggest cheers at the Olympic Aquatic Center were for Brazil's Marcelo Chierighini, who advanced to the final with the eighth-best time.

The tiny island kingdom of Tonga is hoping more tourists will visit after its chiseled flag-bearer became an unexpected sensation at the Olympics opening ceremony.
Pita Taufatofua carried Tonga's flag wearing a traditional mat and with his bare chest oiled and shining. The taekwondo competitor won the hearts of many and has been in hot demand since, even making an appearance on NBC's "Today" show.
Tourism Tonga spokeswoman Seini Taumoepeau said in an email Tuesday there's been lots more online interest in the Pacific nation since Taufatofua's appearance Friday in Rio de Janeiro, and she hopes that will result in increased tourist numbers over the coming months.
She said thousands more people have been clicking on a website promoting Tongan vacations and hundreds more have viewed the kingdom's Facebook page.

Four-time gold medalist Michael Johnson says the booing of athletes at the Olympics would stop if drug cheats were kept out of the games.
The former 200- and 400-meter runner blames the IOC for allowing previous drug violators into the Rio de Janeiro Games.
Johnson says "nobody wants athletes to be booed at the Olympic Games, that's not what this is about."
He says the answer is to "keep athletes who have been doping out of the Olympics and out of the sport, and handing down appropriate punishment."
Johnson says the problem is "on the IOC, it's their event."
IOC President Thomas Bach told The Associated Press on Monday he will try again to push through a rule barring any athletes who have received a serious doping sanction from competing in future Olympics. The proposed rule has been struck down twice by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on grounds it amounts to a second punishment for a single offense.

Michael Phelps will have a shot at two more gold medals in one night at the Rio Olympics.
Phelps is anchoring the U.S. team in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. Conor Dwyer leads off, followed by Townley Haas, Ryan Lochte and Phelps.
The most decorated athlete in Olympic history will be in two finals on Tuesday, going in the 200 butterfly about an hour before he comes back in the relay. Phelps has a shot at the 20th and 21st gold medals of his career, having already carried the Americans to victory in the 4x100 free relay.

Two windows have been shattered when rocks, or possibly gunfire, hit a bus carrying journalists at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. There were no injures.
Rio organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada says "we don't know yet if the bus was shot, or it was a stone."
Andrada says three of the 12 journalists on the bus on Tuesday suffered minor injuries. Photos showed two shattered windows, with tiny chards of glass remaining in place.
A witness on the bus said the occupants hit the floor when they heard a "popping noice."
The bus was traveling from the northern venue cluster of Deodoro to the main Olympic Park in the western suburb of Barra da Tijuca.

China earned its third weightlifting gold of the Rio Olympics on Tuesday as Shi Zhiyong took victory in the men's 69-kilogram category.
Shi lifted 162kg in the snatch and 190 in the clean and jerk for a total of 352, but failed on a world record attempt with his last lift, which would have meant a total of 360. After dropping that weight, he gave roars of disappointment before celebrating the win with his coach.
Silver went to Turkey's Daniyar Ismayilov, who used to represent Turkmenistan, with 351, while Kyrgyzstan won only its fourth Olympic medal ever thanks to Izzat Artykov's 339.
Last year's world silver medalist Oleg Chen did not compete because Russia's team was banned for bringing weightlifting into disrepute with numerous doping cases.

Catalina Usme scored on a free kick at a tight angle in the 90th minute to pull Colombia into a 2-all draw with the United States on Tuesday night.
The top-ranked U.S. still finished atop Group F for good position in the women's soccer quarterfinals at the Rio Games.
Usme also scored in the 26th minute to give the Colombians an early 1-0 lead. It was the team's first-ever Olympic goal, and first-ever goal against the United States.
Teenager Mallory Pugh became the youngest player to score for the United States in an Olympics a 59th-minute goal that gave the Americans a 2-1 lead. Crystal Dunn also scored for the defending champions.
The top-ranked U.S. women's team, the reigning World Cup champion, is vying for its fourth straight Olympic gold medal.

A large contingent of Lithuania fans stood and chanted constantly for all 40 minutes, decked out head-to-toe in green, red and yellow as their national men's basketball team defeated Nigeria 89-80 to improve to 2-0 at the Rio Games.
Lithuania had to rally for the victory as Nigeria surprisingly led 41-36 at halftime behind a barrage of 3-pointers. The Nigerians hit 6 of 9 shots from long range in the second quarter.
That was much different from Sunday's game when Lithuania sprinted out to a 30-point lead against Brazil and held on to win 82-76.
Jonas Maciulis jump-started the comeback with eight points during a 12-0 third-quarter run that gave Lithuania a 59-49 lead. The Lithuanians never trailed again. Maciulis finished with 21 points while Mantas Kalnietis also scored 21 and had 12 assists.
Ike Diogu scored a team-high 19 points for Nigeria for Nigeria (0-2).

Former North Carolina star Laura Sanders scored 36 points to help Turkey knock off previously undefeated Japan 76-62 in women's basketball Tuesday.
Sanders turned in the best scoring performance yet in group play. Japan's loss leaves only Australia undefeated at 3-0 in Group A, while the United States and Canada are 2-0 in Group B.
Sanders, known as LaToya Pringle when she played in college, scored 10 of Turkey's first 20 points in taking control. Turkey led 38-13 on a layup by Sanders with 3:04 left in the second quarter before Japan started whittling away and trailed 38-23 at halftime. Japan (2-1) got within eight on a Yuka Mamiya's layup with 4:20 left. Sanders answered with back-to-back jumpers.
Nevriye Yilmaz added 15, and Isil Alben had 14 for Turkey.
Ramu Tokashiki, who plays for the WNBA's Seattle Storm, led Japan with 13.

Michelle Heyman scored twice and Australia defeated Zimbabwe 6-1 in Salvador. With the win, the Matildas are assured a spot in the quarterfinals.
Lisa De Vanna, Claire Polkinghorne and Alanna Kennedy scored in the opening half, before Kyah Simon's goal and Heyman's pair in the second at Fonte Nova Arena.
Emmaculate Msipu scored in stoppage time for Zimbabwe, which was already eliminated.
Playing in Group F, Australia will not learn its opponent for the quarterfinals until after the day's other matches.

Melissa Tancredi scored both goals and Canada defeated Germany 2-1 on Tuesday night in Brasilia.
Melanie Behringer scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute, but Tancredi scored the equalizer in the 26th before the game winner in the 60th at Mane Garrincha Stadium.
Both teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
With three wins in the opening stage, Canada finished atop Group F. Germany, ranked No. 2 in the world, finished second on goal differential.
Canada, the 2012 Olympics bronze medalists, are ranked No. 10. Coach John Herdman rested captain Christine Sinclair and striker Janine Beckie for the match.

Ireland middleweight boxer Michael O'Reilly has dropped his appeal of a provisional suspension for failing a doping test, ruling him out of the Olympics.
The Olympic Council of Ireland issued a brief statement Tuesday night confirming O'Reilly won't fight in Rio.
O'Reilly says he took a nutritional supplement that may have contained a prohibited substance. He failed a test conducted by Sport Ireland before leaving for the Olympics.
O'Reilly might have been a medal contender in the middleweight division. After receiving an early bye as the No. 3 seed, he was scheduled to fight Friday against Mexico's Misael Rodriguez, who will advance to the quarterfinals.
Last year, O'Reilly won a gold medal at the European Games and a bronze at the world championships.

Taiwan's Lin Tzu-Chi missed her world weightlifting record being broken Tuesday because of problems with a drug test.
The Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, which fields the Taiwan team, says Lin had abnormalities in a drug test sample taken in Taiwan before the Olympics and is provisionally suspended as a result.
With Lin absent, China's Deng Wei took the gold in the 63-kilogram category with a total of 262 kilograms, breaking Lin's world record from 2014 by one kilogram, while Choe Hyo Sim of North Korea took silver and Karina Goricheva of Kazakhstan won bronze.
Lin's withdrawal, hours before her event, had come as a surprise to International Weightlifting Federation officials, who said they had received no information about why she was absent. Lin was the 2014 Asian Games champion.

UPSET ALERT: Defending champion Serena Williams is out of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after a stunning loss in the third round of singles.
The No. 1-seeded American was beaten 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday night by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
Williams made 37 unforced errors, including eight double-faults - five in one game.
She entered the night with a 4-0 record against Svitolina.
But all those mistakes added up, and now the 2012 London gold medalist in singles and doubles is finished in Rio.
She and sister Venus lost in the first round of doubles.

Colombia scored its first-ever Olympic goal against the United States in the 26th minute Tuesday night in Manaus and the teams were tied at halftime.
Catalina Usme's free kick went around the wall and bounced between Hope Solo's legs to give Colombia an early lead.
Crystal Dunn scored the equalizer for the Americans in the 41st minute and the match was knotted at 1 at the break.
The match marked the return of midfielder Megan Rapinoe, who had ACL surgery last December. Rapine was replaced in the 33rd minute by teenager Mallory Pugh. Temperatures at the Amazonia Arena in Manaus were in the upper 80s.

Serena Williams' bid for a second consecutive Olympic singles gold medal is in a bit of trouble.
The No. 1-seeded American lost the opening set of her Rio de Janeiro Games third-round match against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine by a score of 6-4 on Tuesday night.
Williams was not playing all that well for those initial 33 minutes: Of the 29 points Svitolina won in the set, only two came via clean winners of her own doing. Her other points came from 15 unforced errors and 12 forced errors by Williams.
If Svitolina can close the deal, it would be a significant upset. She has never before played in the Olympics and only once been to a major quarterfinal. She also entered the night 0-4 against Williams, an owner of 22 Grand Slam singles championship, the 2012 Olympic singles title and three Olympic doubles golds.

The Belgian Olympic committee says judo competitor Dirk Van Tichelt was hit in the face during celebrations of his bronze medal performance on Copacabana beach.
It said that his phone was stolen late Monday on the popular strip and that he was hit as he was chasing the local thief.
Van Tichelt was taken to hospital for observation but needed no further treatment. He appeared with a black eye at a media event on Tuesday.

Megan Rapinoe was in the starting lineup for the United States on Tuesday night against Colombia at the Olympic.
The winger tore her right ACL during a training session in Hawaii before a scheduled World Cup victory tour match last December and required surgery. She hasn't played in a competitive match since October.
Rapinoe, who helped the United States win the gold at the 2012 London Games and clinch the World Cup title last year in Canada, has looked fit during warmups since the team arrived in Brazil.
The start for Rapinoe was one of several changes U.S. coach Jill Ellis made to the lineup for the match in Manaus. With victories in the first two matches, the Americans were already assured a spot in the quarterfinals.
