Volkswagen's new Atlas SUV is seen by the company as key to growing its U.S. sales. The Atlas, unveiled to VW Chattanooga employees late last year, is slated to start appearing at dealerships next month.

The price of the new Chattanooga-made Volkswagen Atlas sport utility vehicle will start at $30,500, the company announced today.

The manufacturer suggested retail price of $30,500 will be for the four-cylinder turbo 2.0L TSI S FWD model.

At $31,900, the 3.6-liter V6 S FWD model will be available, the company said.

The three-row Atlas, which will start arriving in dealerships in May, will offer an eight-speed automatic transmission with its two powertrains: the four-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter TSI engine, which produces 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and the 3.6-liter VR6 engine, which makes 276-horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque.

An optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available on VR6 models, the company said.
