Kyle Serrano no longer on Vols baseball team

KNOXVILLE - Kyle Serrano's roller coaster Tennessee baseball career is over.

Tennessee baseball's official Twitter account posted Friday that the redshirt junior right-hander has left the team and university "due to personal medical reasons."

"Regarding Kyle Serrano: We ask for the respect of privacy for Kyle, his family and the team at this time," @Vol_Baseball posted on the social media website.

Serrano, the son of Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 and returned to action for the first time on March 10, a year to the day since undergoing the surgery.

A Farragut (Knoxville) High School product, Kyle Serrano was named a top 50 player by Baseball America entering his freshman year.

He appeared in 41 games with 17 starts, posting mixed results, in his first two seasons before the injury his junior year.

Kyle Serrano's only appearance of 2016 came in Chattanooga, when he pitched 3.2 innings in a game against Memphis.

The Milwaukee Brewers took Kyle Serrano in the 40th round of the 2016 MLB Draft, though he opted to return to school.

He last pitched April 14, throwing a scoreless inning against Auburn in a 5-4 Tennessee win. It was his ninth appearance of the season.

Tennessee is in College Station, Tx., for a three-game series with Texas A&M. The Vols dropped the first game of the series 2-1 on Friday.
