UPDATE: Flood warning extended for counties surrounding Chattanooga region

UPDATED April 25at 11:45 p.m.: A flood warning for areas surrounding Chattanooga has been lifted.

The warning was for Bledsoe, Marion and Sequatchie counties in Tennessee and Murray and Whitfield counties in Georgia.

The warning is for Bledsoe, Marion and Sequatchie counties in Tennessee and Murray and Whitfield counties in Georgia.

UPDATED April 24 at 6:45 a.m.: A flood warning is in effect until 2 p.m. today.

South Chickamauga Creek and the Sequatchie River are both under flood warnings affecting Hamilton County, Catoosa County, Bledsoe County, Marion County and Sequatchie County.

The stage for South Chickamauga Creek, as of 6:15 a.m. Monday, was 17.9 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet.

Water begins to cross Mack Smith Road in Catoosa County, Ga. at 18 feet. Flooding begins at golf courses near the confluence of South and West Chickamauga Creeks, and West Chickamauga Creek begins to overflow.

Nonflood flooding is already occurring and minor flooding has been forecast.

The river is expected to fall below flood stage this morning.

UPDATED April 23 at 6:35 p.m.: A Flood Warning has been issued through the evening for the entire area by the National Weather Service.

The warning is in effect until 12:15 a.m.

Three-to-five inches of rain have already fallen. Another one-to-two inches are possible this evening in the area with an excess of 3 inches possible in parts of East Tennessee, North Georgia and North Carolina.

Some roads in the region will flood. Motorists who encounter a flooded road should turn around and not try to cross.

Some cities that will or have experienced flooding today are Chattanooga, Cleveland, Oak Ridge, Athens, Lenoir City, Dayton, Kingston, Sweetwater, Rockwood, Loudon, Dunlap, Madisonville, Jasper, Andrews, Murphy, Pikeville, Decatur, Benton, Ducktown and Hayesville, according to the National Weather Service.

A Flood Warning means flooding is imminent or occurring.

A Flood Watch is also in effect through Monday morning.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Saturday for Northeastern Hamilton, Southern Rhea, East central Sequatchie, Southwestern Bledsoe and Meigs counties.

The warning was in effect until 7 p.m.

A flood advisory was extended until 11:15 p.m. for Rhea, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, Meigs, Marion and Hamilton counties.

A flash flood warning remains in effect for the entire area until Sunday evening.

The storm is moving east at 45 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service, and brings wind gusts of up to 60 mph with quarter size hail.

Hail damage to vehicles is expected, according to the NWS.
