A fire destroyed a home at 571 Highway 11 South in Rising Fawn around 1 a.m. Thursday. Brandy Hester, 26, died on the second floor.

UPDATE: The Fire Marshal's Office has identified the deceased as Brandy Hester.

Chad Payne, a spokesman for the Dade County Sheriff's Office, said three people went to the hospital after the fire. In total, there were six people in the home at the time: the 26-year-old woman, her father-in-law, two elderly people and two children.

The injuries of the three people in the house ranged from a sprained ankle to burns.

The survivors told investigators that the fire broke out while someone was cooking. The father-in-law ran in and out of the house to save the two children, said Glenn Allen, a spokesman for Georgia's Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner. He tried to go back a third time to save the woman, who was on the second floor of the house.

"But he was overcome with smoke and fire," Payne said.

He said the children were not injured.

County Executive Ted Rumley said he home belongs to the Hester family, and property appraiser records show they have lived in that area since at least 1995.
