Republican State Rep. Marc Gravitt has announced his plans to run for Hamilton County register of deeds in the May 2018 primary.

"Serving the people of Hamilton County using the business experience I've obtained for more than 25 years is a true privilege," said Gravitt, who currently representing Tennessee House District 30, which includes parts of Chattanooga, East Ridge, East Brainerd, Apison and Collegedale. "We continue to see at every level of government that when elected leaders come from a business background, applying conservative business principles, taxpayers will benefit from improved services and cost efficiencies."

The register of deeds is responsible for filing and protecting many legal documents including deeds, powers of attorney, land plats and military discharges. Last week, Pam Hurst said she is retiring after serving more than 23 years in the position.

In a statement last week, Deputy Clerk Sheldon Wright also announced his intent to run for the position.
