KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A 1914 monument honoring fallen Confederate soldiers in Tennessee has been splattered with paint, and opponents are signing a petition seeking to have the marker removed.

The Knoxville News Sentinel said the monument is located in a neighborhood that is near the University of Tennessee campus. An overturned can of paint was still sitting nearby Wednesday.

Police said no one had reported the incident, which happened a few days after a deadly clash over a Confederate monument in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Knoxville resident Ben Allen is pushing for removal of the monument in the online petition, which he said he started Tuesday. More than 1,100 people had signed by Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Madeline Rogero's office said she was preparing a statement.
