A man has been arrested after an early morning officer-involved shooting incident on East Third Street, Chattanooga police said.

Lawande Haggard, 29, is charged with aggravated assault on police, felony reckless endangerment and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to a news release.

The department initially said police were called to help disperse a "large gathering" of people in the Speedway parking lot on the 1300 block of East Third Street early Sunday morning.

Police arrived at the gas station shortly after 3 a.m. and heard shots fired. They tried to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle driver drove straight at officers, the release stated.

"Officers fired on suspect vehicle due to the immediate life-threatening harm they were facing," according to the release. The vehicle hit one officer, who was not seriously injured.

The suspected shooter drove away, but was stopped and arrested after a short pursuit, the release stated.

"I was not shooting at the police. I was shooting at someone else," Haggard told police when he was taken into custody.

The Chattanooga Police Department's Violent Crimes Bureau is investigating. Anyone with information regarding this incident to call 423-698-2525.
