The town of Chickamauga, Ga., has been awarded a grant of nearly $545,000 for improvements to its water system.

It's among some $37.55 million in grants announced Thursday by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and Gov. Nathan Deal.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the funding to Georgia's Community Development Block Grant program, which is administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, according to a news release.

"Georgia's economic growth is a result of strong and prosperous communities across the state," Deal stated. "By continuing to invest in our local communities, we are preparing all of Georgia's citizens for an even brighter future as well as solidifying our position as the top state in the nation for business."

The Community Development Block Grant program supports projects in Georgia's small and rural communities that create jobs and help citizens with low and moderate incomes, according to the release. Communities are required to complete their designated projects within two years of receiving awards.

Chickamauga City Manager Micheal Haney did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.
