Dalton man charged in rape attempt

A Dalton man has been charged after a woman said he attempted to rape her Thursday, according to the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office.

The woman told investigators she spent Wednesday night with family members at a home in the 200 block of Wooten Drive and awoke early Thursday to find a relative attempting to have sex with her, according to a news release.

The woman was able to prevent the assault, the release stated.

Detectives were able to find evidence that corroborated the woman's statement, and they picked up and questioned Jose Carmelo Mendoza-Gonzalez, 33.

Detectives searched his bag and found a drug pipe with methamphetamine residue, according to the release.

Mendoza-Gonzalez is charged with criminal attempt to commit rape, aggravated sexual battery, possession of methamphetamine and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

He is being held in the Whitfield County Jail without bond, the release states.
