Woman charged with vehicular homicide in LaFayette crash

LaFayette police charged a woman with vehicular homicide after a man died last weekend in a car crash.

Marsha Harris, 34, of McSars Drive, told an officer that she crashed her Chevrolet Traverse into the side of a Suzuki Sidekick around 8:34 p.m. Friday after crossing Grant Street through Georgia State Route 27.

Harris told an officer that she had waited at a stop sign and looked both ways before driving forward. Then, she heard her son yell, "Mom, there's a car coming!" The officer wrote in his report that Harris appeared to be sober.

When the officer arrived, he found the Suzuki crashed in a ditch. The victim, Derek Hancock, drifted in and out of consciousness at the time. But doctors later pronounced him dead.

Officers booked Harris into the Walker County Jail on Wednesday.
