Two pet dogs were overcome by smoke from a kitchen fire that did $50,000 damage to a Cotter Road home Saturday afternoon, according to a news release.
Amy Maxwell, spokeswoman for Hamilton County Emergency Services, said the homeowner called 911 at 1 p.m. and Dallas Bay firefighters responded to find heavy smoke pouring from the front door and heavy fire in the kitchen.
The Dallas Bay crew called for mutual aid from the Red Bank Fire Department and was able to keep the blaze from spreading to the other rooms or the attic. The homeowner was uninjured but two dogs succumbed to smoke inhalation, Maxwell said.
The fire was blamed on unattended cooking, she said. The homeowner will be staying with family.
