Sheriffs are investigating a domestic violence incident in which a man allegedly fired a gun at his girlfriend Tuesday night before turning the gun on himself.

Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies responding to a shooting at the intersection of Birchwood Pike and Highway 60, learned that 21-year-old Matthew Robert Leon Layne, of Harrison, apparently fired a gun multiple times into a car driven by his girlfriend as she was stopped at the intersection, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said the shooting was the continuation of an argument that occurred earlier in the evening at a different location.

The victim was able to drive off from that location, and Layne followed her to their home.

When deputies arrived at the home, they attempted to persuade Layne to come outside. During the negotiations, deputies heard a gunshot come from inside the residence. Deputies entered the home and found Layne with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to an area hospital where he is being treated for a non-life-threating injury.

The victim received a minor injury that did not require medical attention.
