Jerry Mitchell won tonight's election for the District 2 Chattanooga City Council seat.
He received 1,837 votes, or 65.3 percent. His challenger, Mickey McCamish received 964 votes.
District 2 covers from North Shore to Northgate, as well as the precincts Lupton City, Riverview and Stuart Heights.
Mitchell, 62, the incumbent, has been on the city council since 2013. He is the council's vice chair and heads up the Human Resources Committee.
He ran on a platform of making Chattanooga as business-friendly as possible, with the goal of bringing in more outdoor offerings and signature tourism events. He also supports public education and early education initiatives. He wants to focus on Public safety funding, homelessness and mental health, workforce development, infrastructure maintenance and government transparency.
Mitchell used to be the director of Chattanooga's Parks and Recreation Department.
McCamish, 74, is the executive director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee and is a retired U.S. Navy Captain.
The key issues he raised during the race were curbing homelessness among military veterans, public safety and education. He is supporter of Chattanooga 2.0, a community-led education and workforce development initiative.
