A 44-year-old man died after experiencing a medical emergency this morning in the Hamilton County Jail.

Jeffery Simmons was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead, according to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Matt Lea.

The Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the death and the department has no further information at this time, Lea said.

Hamilton County General Sessions Court clerks said authorities served an arrest warrant on Simmons today for failing to appear Feb. 8 on a domestic assault charge he picked up in December 2016.

It's fairly common for judges to issue an arrest warrant when someone who makes bond doesn't return to court.

Simmons was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and drugs general category for resale today, records show.

The circumstances of those charges are unclear because the Times Free Press has not been able to obtain a copy of his arrest affidavit yet.

This is a developing story. Please check back later for more details.
