The Chattanooga Times Free Press was recognized as one of the best Southeast news organizations in the Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade Awards.
The Times Free Press won 13 awards, including nine first-place awards, the most of any newspaper. The contest is among news organizations across 11 Southeastern states.
Times Free Press first-place awards were for:
' Investigative reporting, to Kendi Rainwater for coverage of the Ooltewah High School rape.
' Disaster reporting, for staff coverage of the Woodmore bus crash.
' Feature photography, for a collection of photographs by staff photographers.
' Newspaper graphics, to Matt McClane for an illustration on the Superbowl.
' Magazine illustrations, to Eric Taylor for work in GetOut magazine.
' Magazine graphics, to Taylor and Stephen Ratajczyk for work in Chatter and GetOut magazines.
' Magazine covers, to Taylor for GetOut.
' Online non-deadline reporting, to Joan Garrett McClane and Joy Lukachick Smith for "The Poverty Puzzle."
' Online investigative reporting, to Rainwater for "Code of Silence," about the Ooltewah High School rape.
Second-place awards were for: Humorous commentary for columns by Mark Kennedy; editorial cartoons by Clay Bennett; and magazine covers for Chatter magazine.
Since 1950, the Green Eyeshade Awards has honored the best journalism in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
