A Chattanooga man has been charged with aggravated domestic assault after police, a SWAT team and hostage negotiators converged on a home behind Ace Hardware on Highway 58 Thursday afternoon.

Officers were initially dispatched to a disorder call on the 4300 block of Arbor Lane. When they arrived they heard shots fired from inside the house, according to a release from Rob Simmons, public information officer for the Chattanooga Police Department.

The victim left the residence unharmed and told police that the suspect, Buster Verdin Garrison, 84, was inside with a gun.

Police asked Garrison to leave the house but he refused. Officers with the hostage negotiation team attempted to talk with Garrison and SWAT officers used a camera to assess the situation inside the house.

Garrison disarmed himself voluntarily and officers were able to safely enter the home and take him into custody. He was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted and was taken to a local hospital, according to the release.

Because of the domestic nature of this incident, the victim will not be identified.
