A senior set to graduate from North Forsyth High School is facing DUI, serious injury by vehicle and other charges after a fiery head-on crash Saturday, a sheriff's official said.
The crash involving Trevor Johnson, 18, also injured a 49-year-old man from Cumming, according to Doug Rainwater of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.
About 5:30 p.m., Johnson was traveling east on Heard Road near Heard Lane in a Dodge Ram pickup when he left the roadway and sideswiped a tree, Rainwater said. Johnson overcorrected, which then sent him into the westbound lane, where he hit an Acura driven by the Cumming man, according to Rainwater.
Both vehicles became engulfed in flames, Rainwater said. Some people nearby stopped to help and pulled both drivers to safety.
The drivers were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where Johnson was later released to police, Rainwater said. He was taken to jail after he was determined to be under the influence of alcohol.
The other driver, who was not identified, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Johnson also was charged with underage consumption of alcohol, failure to maintain lane and driving too fast for conditions, all misdemeanors, according to Rainwater.
