Helpers are needed to spruce up the Sterchi Farm Park and Trailhead during Family Volunteer Day on Saturday, sponsored by the Chattanooga Parks Division.

The event is part of a national initiative by the Walt Disney Co., which has organized a national Family Volunteer Day on the Saturday before Thanksgiving for 22 years, according to a city news release.

The volunteer day kicks off the holiday season with a service opportunity, and adults and children can meet new friends and learn about stewardship, the release states. It also has a connection with the city's Meet Me at the Park project, which is funded by the National Recreation and Park Association and aims to improve access to outdoor play including trails, mobile play, play spaces and sports.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers will work until noon on projects such as invasive plant removal, litter pick-up, graffiti removal and fence-staining. Lunch and an information session will follow.

Topics include the Sterchi Farm and city partners such as the Chattanooga Park Stewards, Trust for Public Land, WildOnes, GreenSteps, GreenTrips and the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway Alliance.
