The Hamilton County school board discussed its stance on the potential breakaway of Signal Mountain community to form its own school district and voted on a resolution concerning the issue.

The resolution states that the Hamilton County Board of Education will not sell buildings to Signal Mountain if it decides to create its own school district, but the board still has a responsibility to educate students on Walden and unincorporated areas of Hamilton County.

The resolution was approved 7-1.

School board chairman Steve Highlander said he hopes Signal Mountain decides to stay within the district. Highlander acknowledged it's their decision but also warned of financial burdens they may not be able to carry.
