Varnell, Ga., officer found dead with gunshot wound after crash in Ringgold, Ga.

A Varnell, Ga., police officer died after the vehicle he was driving crashed down an embankment on Highway 41 in Ringgold, Ga., Saturday night.

The officer was found inside the car with a gunshot wound, according to a news release. No foul play is suspected.

Witnesses said the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed before it crashed.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called by the Ringgold Police Department to help investigate.The Georgia State Patrol and Catoosa County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.

The officer was a part-time patrol officer and detective with the Varnell Police Department.

"[He] will be sorely missed by our agency," the police department posted on its Facebook page. "[He] actually went above and beyond with our department being both a patrol officer on the street, and also a criminal investigator."
