Hamilton County deputies nab attempted burglary suspect after he wrecks motorcycle, tries to swim away

An attempted burglary was thwarted late Wednesday night and the suspect tried to escape by jumping into Lake Chickamauga, according to a Hamilton County Sheriff's Office news release.

A person attempting to break into Chattanooga Fish and Fun in Hixson triggered a security camera system late Wednesday night, alerting the owner of the business.

The proprietor immediately contacted the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and drove to the business. As deputies arrived on scene, Stephen Henshaw fled on a motorcycle on Gold Point Circle and headed towards Chester Frost Park, according to the news release.

Deputies pursued Henshaw until he wrecked his motorcycle near one of the boat ramps in the park. Henshaw then proceeded to the water where he attempted to swim away from deputies to avoid capture. With the aid of a boat owned by an onlooker, deputies were able to retrieve the suspect from the water and take him safely into custody, according to the report.

Henshaw is facing numerous charges including evading arrest and vandalism.

The investigation is ongoing.
