A Chattanooga police officer was arrested Saturday afternoon on domestic assault charges in Collegedale, Tenn.

Officer Christopher Day, 26, has been suspended from his job, pending the investigation, Chattanooga police spokeswoman Elisa Myzal said.

A witness called police after finding the victim crying on a staircase in an apartment complex, according to the police report.

In a statement to police, the victim said she and Day had been arguing about who would pick up food and whether a child could ride with Day.

Day allegedly cornered the victim and put his hand over her throat after she asked him to let go of the child. Once he let go, the victim said she was going to call the police, and Day responded, saying, "OK it's all about how you articulate it," according to the police report.

After the victim called a family member of Day's, he allegedly grabbed her arm and dragged her across the floor.

When Day returned to the scene, he told Collegedale police officers he and the victim had been arguing "over petty stuff," the report states. He said he left and came back to find the victim was trying to leave. He said he "tried to pull her to me so we could talk. She said I hurt her so I let go. We continued to argue so I left."

Day has worked as a patrol officer for Chattanooga police since April 2015. His court date is set for Dec. 6.
