A Mississippi woman was killed Monday in Fort Payne, Ala., when she got out a car to retrieve items that fell from a utility trailer and was struck by another vehicle.

The victim was identified as Mary Delana Austin, 40, of Nesbit, Miss., Fort Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum said in a statement.

Bynum said the vehicle Austin was in was traveling toward Rainsville on Glenn Boulevard when some items spilled from the vehicle's utility trailer. The vehicle turned around and Austin got out to retrieve the items when a vehicle traveling the opposite direction struck her, the chief said.

Austin was flown to Huntsville Hospital for treatment but she later died, Bynum said.

The chief said witnesses to the accident said the vehicle Austin was in had stopped in the center turn lane with its headlights on bright and was blinding oncoming traffic.

"The investigation continues but it appear there will be no criminal charges filed as it was an unfortunate accident," Bynum said.
