One brother dead, one rescued after being swept over the falls at Georgia park

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) - Two brothers were swept over the falls at a Georgia park, leaving one boy dead.

News outlets report that 12-year-old Christian Burdette drowned Tuesday morning at High Falls State Park after the about 20-feet (6.1-meter) fall. Monroe County Emergency Management Director Matthew Perry says responding crews saw 17-year-old James Burdette in a shallow area on a rock.

Perry says high water levels made the area he was found in inaccessible by boat, requiring an air rescue by a crew from Kennesaw.

James Burdette was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. His current condition is unknown.

Perry says it appeared the boys had strayed from hiking trails before their fall.
