The Hamilton County Clerk's Office has announced it has turned over $868,300 in excess fees to Hamilton County's general government.

Much of the extra money came from additional contracted work, Hamilton County Clerk Bill Knowles said, citing agreements - taken on voluntarily - with the Tennessee Department of Revenue, the Tennessee Department of Safety and the City of Chattanooga.

"It's a challenge taking on added responsibilities to help taxpayers, including making Chattanooga's $5 sticker available when motorists renew a state vehicle registration, printing duplicate motor vehicle titles 'while you wait,' renewing a state driver's license at the courthouse office and processing large fleet orders for the transportation industry," Knowles said. "I consider these functions an extra dimension of service that enables our office to contribute to the general government."

Knowles commended his staff for their diligent work and their commitment to serving growing numbers of Hamilton County citizens.
