The inside of the Bradley County Courthouse was damaged in a fire Saturday morning.

The mechanical room on the first floor caught fire and sustained major damage, according to authorities.

A bystander saw black smoke coming from inside the county courthouse in downtown Cleveland, Tenn., Bradley County spokesman James E. Bradford Jr. said.

Cleveland firefighters forced their way into the building and found the fire. They put it out, but the courthouse sustained substantial smoke and fire damage, according to Bradford.
