Former Bradley County sheriff Tim Gobble is among the 10 finalists for the top job at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, multiple Nashville media outlets report.

Current Director Mark Gwyn is retiring June 1. The state Department of Human Resources had its first meeting Wednesday and whittled a list of 44 applicants down to 10, News Channel 5 in Nashville reported.

Those 10 will be interviewed next month and a final list of three names will be sent to Gov. Bill Haslam.

Gobble now serves on the Tennessee Board of Parole. He worked for the U.S. Secret Service and began his public service career with his election to the Cleveland City Council in 2002.

He was elected Bradley County sheriff in 2006, giving up the office in 2010 for an unsuccessful bid for the 3rd Congressional District. He also has served as emergency management director for Bradley County, as East Ridge city manager and as interim deputy chief of the Hamilton County Jail.
