Dr. Charles Woods has been named chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga and chief medical officer of the Children's Hospital at Erlanger.

In his new position, Woods will oversee department faculty, faculty appointments and educational activities at Children's Hospital, the only pediatric specialty hospital in the region and one of six hospitals now in the Erlanger Health System.

"He brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and academic leadership skills with him to these positions. His arrival will put us in an excellent position to move forward with improvements in our pediatric training programs and patient care," said Dr. Bruce Shack, dean of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga.

Woods is an Alabama native who graduated from Samford University. He attended medical school and completed his residency and fellowship training in pediatric infectious diseases at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

He has served in numerous roles, including chairman, in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine since 2006.

Woods will begin his new leadership role at Erlanger this summer.
