A section of state Highway 68 about three miles north of Spring City in Rhea County is closed after part of the road cracked and slid down a slope.

The highway will be closed until further notice, the Tennessee Department of Transportation said in a news release.

TDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said TDOT closed one outside lane early today after heavy rains caused cracks to open in the road. While TDOT was evaluating the cracks, the roadway broke off and fell, Flynn said.

She said electronic message boards will be posted notifying the public of the closure.
