Firefighters battled a fire at a self-storage facility Wednesday afternoon on Polymer Drive, according to a Chattanooga Fire Department news release.

Hamilton County 911 received multiple calls from motorists on Highway 153 about 1 p.m. reporting that there was a large fire at Public Storage on the 2200 block of Polymer Drive.

Six fire companies with the Chattanooga Fire Department responded, and Capt. Terri Roshell with Quint 8 said three of the storage units on one end of Building A were fully engulfed in flames and the fire was spreading rapidly.

As additional fire companies arrived on the scene, the firefighters had to cut the locks off, or use power saws, to gain access to the individual units. Battalion Chief Lesley Morgan said it took the firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.

Capt. Roshell said a total of eight units were damaged by the fire. Some adjacent units had smoke and water damage, but most of the units in Building A were saved. None of the other storage buildings were damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Chattanooga Police Department and Hamilton County Emergency Services provided assistance on the scene.
