ATLANTA (AP) - A former high-ranking Atlanta city official has been sentenced to just over two years in prison after pleading guilty in an ongoing corruption investigation.

Ex-chief procurement officer Adam Smith pleaded guilty in September to a conspiracy charge. Smith told U.S. District Judge Steve Jones during his sentencing hearing Tuesday that he was deeply remorseful.

Federal prosecutors asked Jones to reduce Smith's sentence by 40 percent based on his "substantial assistance" with recordings and information in the investigation. The judge agreed to that in imposing a sentence of two years and three months.

Smith was also ordered to pay $44,000 restitution and a $25,000 fine.

Prosecutors have said Smith accepted more than 40 bribe payments over roughly two years from an unnamed vendor who received millions of dollars in city contracts.
