A minor earthquake hit East Ridge on Tuesday morning.

The magnitude-2.5 temblor occurred just after 6:30 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was six miles below ground. No damage has been reported.

It is the second earthquake to hit the East Ridge-Ft. Oglethorpe area this year. On Jan. 8, a 2.7 quake was reported.

Seismic activity is quite common in Tennessee and northwest Georgia, according to the USGS. This is because of the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone, which is one of the most active earthquake zones in the southeast. The largest known quake - a 4.6 magnitude - hit near Fort Payne, Alabama, on April 29, 2003.

The New Madrid seismic zone covers areas of Tennessee that are further west.
