Make no mistake that Keller Chryst's commitment to Tennessee will shake up the Vols' quarterback competition entering the 2018 season.

Chryst has 13 career starts at Stanford and was one of the hottest names on the graduate transfer market at quarterback this offseason.

Tennessee had reportedly expressed interest in others, such as Wagner graduate transfer Alex Thompson and East Carolina graduate transfer Gardner Minshew.

But Minshew chose Alabama, at least partially because of what a season with the Crimson Tide could do for the coaching career he aspires to have. And Thompson chose a somewhat low-key destination in Marshall.

You would imagine Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt, and especially offensive coordinator Tyson Helton, are pleased with how things panned out. Chryst is easily the most-proven out of those three, although there were a handful of other quarterbacks with starting experience on the graduate transfer market.

James Morgan, who is headed to Florida International as a graduate transfer from Bowling Green, has some nice career numbers, as does Dru Brown, who is headed to Oklahoma State from Hawaii.

Others such as Iowa State's Jacob Park and Arizona's Brandon Dawkins are still on the market and will have good options.

But with an 11-2 career record as a starter, Chryst may be the best of the bunch. In an ideal world for Tennessee, the Vols would have been able to find some loopholes to get their graduate transfer quarterback enrolled in time for spring practices, which begin later this month.

That won't happen with Chryst, since he is not graduating from Stanford until June.

Presumably, that gives Jarrett Guarantano and Will McBride a leg up in the competition, since they will have the benefit of immersing themselves in Helton's system before Chryst and incoming freshman JT Shrout arrive.

Nonetheless, a guy with Chryst's pedigree must have been given a pretty good idea that Tennessee views him as a potential QB1 for year one of the Pruitt era.

Weeklys square off

Between the men's basketball team's sold-out regular season finale on Saturday and the baseball and softball teams both hosting weekend-long events, it's going to be a hectic few days in Tennessee athletics. And that's not mentioning the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament occurring in Nashville.

One of the most intriguing storylines on the wild weekend will be in the Tennessee Invitational at Lee Stadium. Toledo freshman Taylor Weekly is the granddaughter of Tennessee softball co-head coach Ralph Weekly. They will face off at 5:30 today.

The instances of a grandparent coaching against their grandchild in Division 1 athletics are surely few and far between. Will he crack a smile if she gets on base?
