Chattanooga's Volkswagen assembly plant will see a new project as the brand's top official in America will join Gov. Bill Haslam in an announcement at the factory on Monday afternoon.

Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America and the CEO Volkswagen North American Region, will take part.

Along with the governor, Antonio Pinto, president and CEO of Volkswagen Chattanooga, will be on hand.

The plant, which employs about 3,400 people, currently produces the Passat midsize sedan and the seven-seat Atlas SUV. The plant began Atlas production last year as part of its so-called SUV offensive.

The company wants to sell more sport utility vehicles in America as motorists' tastes turn to buying SUVs and trucks over cars.
