"Resource 1 Electronics is devoted to secure, on-site classified data destruction and computer recycling services," according to the business's website.

Chuck McDonald, president of the business and a 30-year veteran of the international information technology marketplace, is dedicated to the concept of secure, environmentally sound destruction practices.

"We specialize in the NSA-approved degaussing and secure shredding of electronic storage media devices for government, financial institutions, health care entities, hospitals, private industry, military installations, and virtually anyone who demands classified, secure and compliant destruction of hard drives and tape media," he explained. "We're the only company in this region who does what we do."

McDonald acquired the company in June 2015 and shifted the focus to data security and destruction, and the team was up and serving clients by fall of that year.

The group owns the most technologically advanced, secure and National Security Agency-approved machinery manufactured in the United States today, and boasts a well-trained staff of data destruction technicians who are thoroughly vetted and have undergone background checks, as well as trained on the latest methods of secure data destruction.

The real key to what sets the business apart is that it allows clients to witness all destruction, and then provides them with a certificate of destruction upon completion of a job.

"That's really huge when it comes to peace of mind," said Vice President of Logistics Anthony Mundis. "We actually do everything on-site and allow the client into the truck with us so they are a witness firsthand to everything being properly destroyed."

The process of data destruction begins with a client in need reaching out to the team at Resource 1, either by phone or by scheduling an on-site assessment to be conducted by the technicians.

"We try to get an idea of a client's volume, and then we can do a risk assessment to determine priority and which of our services best suits their needs," Mundis explained.

From there, the team actually brings their mobile lab – basically a self-contained power plant -- to the job site and begins the process of secure and safe destruction with the client present, eliminating any chain of custody issues.

"After a job is done, the materials we are left with are sent to an ISO certified downstream recycling company with people who are specialized in sorting through it," McDonald added. "They can reuse elements of copper, aluminum and other precious metals."

Hard drives, smartphones, floppies and more are shredded on-site. Computer hard drives are scanned in the lab by model and serial number, which also feeds out onto the certificate of destruction that provides the client with a viable paper trail in the event of an audit. Financial institutions, law firms, health care providers and more are just a few of the clients served by Resource 1 Electronics, and its market is growing daily into state and federal government areas.

All clients receive a live certificate of destruction outlining every device processed and destroyed, which ensures clients remain compliant with governing organizations, as well as certifying that their companies have taken all the proper steps in protecting their sensitive data.
