Growing a market where farmers are the key

* Name: Padget Arnold

* Position: Manager

* Location: Main Street Farmers Market

* First Job: Working at Ruby Falls, doing everything except being a tour guide.

* Favorite thing: Being a key person in communication and promotion on behalf of the local farmers who sell at the market. She enjoys promoting local food and helping to spread the message about why eating and buying local is good for both the individual and the community.

* Least favorite: Having to decide who can and cannot sell at the market. Currently, Arnold and the market's board of directors are establishing a screening process that will determine the requirements and guidelines for having a booth. "We really want to encourage sustainable agriculture and make this market, in particular, sort of the farmers market that's run by farmers for farmers." She said the goal is to highlight small family farms and keep the market from becoming too large, as that would be overwhelming. "It's hard to turn folks away, but we're trying to grow it slowly and smartly."

* Best advice: "Always look beyond what's right in front of your face. Think about the larger picture and what (your work) means to the community and how it can effectively interact with the community. Try to keep that in mind and keep (the big picture) in mind when you make decisions. Make yourself available (to people). Ask for feedback. Be open to communication."

* Making a career of it: Arnold said communication skills and an understanding of agriculture are equally important skills to have if one wishes to manage a farmers market, though she doesn't believe it's necessary to follow in her footsteps of being a farmer for a decade before taking the position.
