Tailoring family fitting city for 40 years

* What: Custom-tailored suits

* Company: Yacoubian Tailors

* Address: 721 Broad St.

* Website: www.yacoubians.com

* Telephone: 265-0187

* Owner: John Yacoubian

* What's special: The majority of Yacoubian suits are hand-crafted, using the best fabrics in the world and the best tailoring techniques, the best make, said Hovig Yacoubian, Mr. Yacoubian's son. Thanks to the elder Mr. Yacoubian's training as an authentic tailor, he made everything by hand until the early 1980s. "We can fit people the right way," the younger Yacoubian said.

* The origin story: John Yacoubian came to America after working in his uncle's tailoring shop in Beirut, Lebanon. He fell in love with Chattanooga while visiting his brother at Tennessee Temple University in 1968. After working for eight months with another tailor, he opened his own shop and continues to work in the store daily.

* How long does it take to make? A full suit can take four to five weeks.

* Where it's sold: The Broad Street store is the only location where Yacoubian Tailors' suits are sold.

* How long have they been making them? Yacoubian Tailors opened in November 1969. Mr. Yacoubian began apprenticing as a tailor at age 14 and made his first full suit at 17.

* Future expansions planned: "We're always milling around expansions, conceptually, but we don't have anything concrete nailed down," Hovig Yacoubian said.

* Lessons of the trade: "Treat the customer the way you want to be treated yourself," Mr. Yacoubian said, through his son. "That's the only secret in business, and it's not really a secret."
