VW brand sales up in quarter

Volkswagen brand sales in North America jumped 15.5 percent in the first quarter over a year ago to 106,300 units, the German car maker reported Wednesday.

Worldwide, deliveries topped 1.2 million for the first time, up 10.4 percent in the quarter.

"Deliveries by the Volkswagen brand have developed extremely well," said Christian Klingler, board member for sales and marketing for the Volkswagen Group. Asia sales rose more than 18 percent.

IRS says 600,000 wait to file return

NASHVILLE - The Internal Revenue Service estimates that 600,000 Tennesseans have waited until April to file their federal income tax returns.

The IRS said in a news release Wednesday that Tennesseans have e-filed about 695,000 tax returns from their own computers, up 10.7 percent over this time last year.

With the April 18 filing deadline near, the agency said 169,000 taxpayers are expected to request a six-month filing extension.

IRS offices in Chattanooga, Jackson, Johnson City, Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Filers whose income was $49,000 or less can get their taxes prepared and e-filed on a first-come, first-served basis. The official IRS website, www.IRS.gov, is a 24/7 source for information.
