The sale of Cigna's Nashville-based government services division to the South Carolina BlueCross plan is cutting 18 support jobs at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

The Chattanooga-based BlueCross issued a layoff notice Monday with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development indicating it will cut 18 positions from its Riverbend government services division by the end of October because of the Medicare contract changes.

BlueCross spokeswoman Mary Danielson said the company will work to find other jobs for displaced workers, noting that overall employment at BlueCross of Tennessee rose in the past year by 63 positions to a total staff of 5,435.
