Steel firm cuts staff, keeps site

Ryerson Inc. has consolidated its Chattanooga sales office with its Southeast division headquarters in Norcross, Ga., cutting 12 Chattanooga jobs, according to a company employee.

Terry Rogers, chief financial officer for the Chicago-based steel processor, declined Friday to discuss the staff cuts in Chattanooga. But he said the company is maintaining its distribution facility on Polymer Drive in Chattanooga

"We're taking some actions to consolidate some redundant activity in our sales force, but we're still very committed to the Chattanooga market and to Tennessee as a whole," he said.

Unum CEO rings NYSE at closing

Unum Corp. CEO Tom Watjen helped close down trading for the week on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday in New York.

Watjen gaveled the trading to a close to mark the 25th anniversary for the Chattanooga-based disability insurer to trade on the NYSE.

"The past 25 years, in particular, have been a significant period of change and consolidation for our company, but our focus today on the critical importance of employee benefits has never been stronger," he said.
