Regions Bank replaces entranceway downtown

photo Masonry contractors with Gentry and Painter work on the plaza outside Regions Bank at Market and Fifth streets in Chattanooga.

• Name: Regions Bank main office for Southeast Tennessee

• Location: 601 Market St.

• Status: The project is about 40 percent complete.

• Features: Workers are replacing the concrete band that surrounds the Regions Bank regional headquarters on Market Street and connects it to the sidewalk. The old concrete pavers had become cracked and uneven, so officials are working to "make it safe for elderly people and people in wheelchairs," said Regions spokeswoman Leigh Todd. The new paving stones use modern construction techniques that will enable them to last for years to come, Todd said. The process involves removing the old pavers.

• Completion date: November

• Builder: Vega Corp. of Tennessee

• Company info: Regions Financial Corp. is based in Birmingham, Ala. Formed in 1971 as First Alabama Bancshares, it was designed as a holding company for three other banks. Regions adopted its current name in 1994, and merged with Memphis-based Union Planters Corp that same year. It merged with AmSouth in 2006, becoming the nation's eighth largest bank. In metropolitan Chattanooga, Regions operates 23 branches with more than $1.4 billion in deposits.
