App lets users avoid iPhone mob

Crowd control? Yeah, there's an app for that.

In preparation for the launch of Apple's new iPhone 4S on Oct. 14, AT&T has released AT&T Upgrader, a new app to inform customers of their eligibility to upgrade their handset. The app that became available through the Apple App Store on Tuesday will inform eligible customers of the price of upgrading and allow them to place a pre-order starting Friday.

AT&T spokeswoman Cathy Lewandowski said offering customers a chance to digitally queue up for an upgrade should help curtail crowding at stores when the new phone releases.

The iPhone 4S will be available in black or white for $199-$399, depending on hard drive size. The 8-gigabyte model of the iPhone 4 also has been reduced in price to $99, and AT&T will offer customers the 8-gigabyte iPhone 3GS for free to those who sign a two-year service agreement.
